Summer camp prepares youngsters for work

Dubai’s summer camp, Moltaqa Al Ma’arefa, has got off to an enthusiastic start. The girls’ activities begin next week, but the boys are already in full swing. Six thousand young Nationals aged from 7 to 18 will take part in the camp, which is held at 10 centres around Dubai.

The camp is run by Dubai Schools Agency (DSA), the first agency of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, and includes activities ranging from diving to learning the Quran. One popular part of the programme, “Mihnati” (My Profession) will give 200 young people (100 boys and 100 girls) the chance to get a taste of the workplace.

Working in partnership with local companies, the students will be placed with employers for a month or two months, at the end of which the employer will assess the students to help them towards planning a career. Employers met up with the young people taking part earlier this week at an orientation session.

Taha al Hamri,  Director of the Administrative Services Unit of DSA, said, “Dubai Schools Agency is co-operating with many private and public organisations  with the aim of preparing students to enter the job market through providing them with  the necessary skills for their careers. It also aims to give students practical experience and an introduction to possible career choices. This project also aims to nurture commitment, discipline, and social responsibility among students.”

Transport to and from the centres is provided. The boys’ activities include horse riding and swimming, lectures and training courses, field trips and learning the Quran.

The activities at the centres for girls will begin this week. These will include tennis, horse riding, and swimming, as well as cooking, crafts, Quran studies, and fashion design. They will also attend courses on hosting etiquette and public speaking, IT and English language for mothers and children.

The camp began on June 8 and lasts for six weeks. The name of the camp, Moltaqa Al Ma’arefa, means “a forum for knowledge”. It will end with a ceremony on July 27 to honour everyone who took part, the organizers, and outstanding students.
